Mission and Goals
The PMI Central Ohio Mentor Program mission is consistent with the mission of PMI and the PMI Central Ohio Chapter to provide members with the opportunity to grow professionally and provide opportunities to network and share knowledge and experiences. Goals include identifying a pool of experts or mentors to chapter members and establishing the infrastructure to support mentors and those seeking mentors to make a connection under the auspices of the mentoring program.
Definition
Mentoring is a personal, one-on-one activity whereby the mentor serves as an advisor, coach, subject matter expert, and counselor. It represents an opportunity where a knowledgeable and experienced person can assist another to develop skills and/or transfer knowledge based on a trusting personal relationship. Mentors and the mentoring process are most effective when the person being mentored trusts the relationship and regards it as a risk-free process.
Mentor Characteristics
A mentor is someone who has accumulated experience, skills, and knowledge that others would find useful in developing their careers and is willing to share it. A mentor has the following characteristics:
Good Interpersonal Skills
- Ability to effectively communicate, identify problems, formulate suggestions, actively listen, and relate experiences relevantly and effectively.
Knowledge of Industry/Area of Expertise
- Good knowledge of and experience in designated industry or area of expertise including network of contacts/resources.
Good Coaching Skills
- Good facilitator, leader, team builder, cheerleader. Mentoring is not a superior-subordinate type of relationship.
Professional/Technical Competence
- Subject matter expert with demonstrated accomplishments and skills including project management knowledge.
Confidentiality/Trust
- Ability to inspire confidence, maintains confidentiality of mentoring relationship, and establishes a trusting relationship.
